dont know about the xl, but the small is a miser compared to the large. ive literally cooked riblets for 5 hours with a double handful of spent/used lump in the small. maybe an inch and a half of lump covering the lump grate.
The Big Green Egg XL is a dramatic expansion over the Large size. The 24-inch diameter cooking grate has nearly twice the cooking surface at 452 square inches. This is large enough to easily hold two 20-pound turkeys with room to throw on a couple of burgers while you wait. For the average backyard cook, this is probably too much space and the

DK7 • 9 years ago. I have the Big Green Egg XL and it has more grill space than the Primo Oval XL. I can do direct and indirect at the same time and I have smoked meats for over 30 hours at 225 and lower with no need to add lump or wood. If you are considering a ceramic cooker, compare apples to apples.
Big Joe III vs. XL BGE I’m getting ready to upgrade my WSM to a Kamado style grill/smoker and I’m struggling to decide between a XL Big Green Egg and the Big Joe III. When it’s all set and done I plan to smoke meats, grill steaks & veggies (at different heights/temperatures) and will likely also cook pizzas.

I went from a large to an XL bge for the same reason. I don’t agree with the opinion that the XL takes a lot of charcoal and time to heat. I use a small amount of charcoal to quickly make a fire hot enough to cook 6 chicken breasts directly in roughly 45-60 minutes total (including prep, heating, and cooking).
Both are similarly priced and both have dealers close to my home. They both appear to be about the same thickness and materials. I think they both offer an additional rack to increase cooking capacity. I like the BGE XL because it appears to have a little more grid space, according to specs and appearance. It also appears to be a little taller
Design. The Big Green Egg has a shape as it is named. It has an egg-shaped compartment containing all the necessary objects for firing it up and retaining the heat. The Vision Grills have this design as well. The shape’s key purpose is to limit the airflow for the grills to produce the smoky flavor.
